We pose the fundamental questions about law and economics and investigate the pioneering questions.
We promote interdisciplinary, comparative, and innovative research on the new paradigms of law and economics: we study the major economic and legal challenges posed to national and European sovereignty, world governance, sustainable growth, and international justice.
Our projects analyse and contribute to the legal, economic, and ethical problems raised by the digital revolution and the climate crisis; by the democratic deficit in global governance and the growing global asymmetries; the failures of the transparent, independent, and effective functioning of public services and justice, which are conditions of liberal democracy; and market failures.
Our activities are guided by applied research, at the intersection between academia and institutions - at a national, european, and international level -, and the business world.
We are guided by the paradigm of multilateral cooperation, we believe in international justice as recognition of the other, and in the European governance model, which, although not perfect, represents an example of governance for the entire world.
We promote creativity, free discussion, and an open and plural debate through our activities – seminars, webinars, conferences, databases, reports, and publications. Our publications are made through CIDEEFF Working Papers and Lisbon Seminars Working Papers, were we give opportunity to younger researchers to publish their work and share their work. Through our journals – the Journal of Public Finance and Fiscal Law and the Journal of Regulation & Competition – we promote the discussion between practitioners and academics. All these publications are in peer review. Our associates have been publishing in international journals, academically recognized.
Based at FDUL's facilities, CIDEEFF is composed of Professors from the Legal-Economic Sciences Group (integrated members) and associated researchers, national and foreign, in the areas of Tax Law, International Economic Law, Regulation and Competition Law and Public Finance. and Financial Law.

- Our research is free, independent and objective, developed individually or collectively;
- The researchers are responsible for the methods and outcome of the investigation;
- The research process is carried out by the members considering a common scientific objective and as an instrument for the improvement of society;
- Knowledge is shared, in dialogue with different scientific disciplines and cultures.
- Contribute to improving practices and finding appropriate legal solutions that can influence policy makers both internationally (WTO, IMF, World Bank), regionally (EU institutions and Member States) and nationally; in Lusofonia (Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique) and in Latin American countries;
- Promote international research carried out at the Centre;
- Create research networks with universities and academics from different countries, in order to encourage a debate with different perspectives (e.g., OECD and developing countries; EU and Lusophone countries);
- Promoting the publication on the CIDEEFF website of original articles (working papers) by integrated members and associates of CIDEEFF and doctoral students, with peer-review;
- Promote and support projects, junior and senior research and PhD students;
- Facilitate the transfer of knowledge in the academic community, public institutions, and civil society.
The Centre develops its work around a single line of research, subdivided into Research Groups.
- Group 1 – Tax governance;
- Group 2 - Globalization, economic integration and development;
- Group 3 - Market failures in a globalized economy;
- Group 4 - Crises, Public Policies, Fiscal Policy and the Euro.
